How do you get a lecture hall running reliably again — without stripping it bare and starting from scratch?
At the Johann Radon Institute at JKU Linz, the media technology had reached the end of its comfortable life after nearly twelve years — technically dated, and increasingly unreliable in everyday use. Instead of an expensive clean sweep, the task was something more precise: modernise what was already there, rethink the heart of the system, and make operation simple enough for anyone on the team to understand.
The result is a lecture hall that works reliably again — and feels as if it had just been built.
Problem
Media technology ages quietly. Over twelve years, reliability slips one small step at a time: devices stop talking to each other cleanly, operation becomes a hurdle, and eventually almost nobody wants to touch the tech in front of a full lecture.
That was exactly where the institute stood. The system was functionally outdated, the control was cumbersome, and a failure in the middle of live teaching was a real risk. A full replacement would have solved it — but at a cost out of all proportion to the actual need. Much of what was already in the room was still perfectly sound.
GOAL
The brief was a modern, clear media control system that anyone on the team could operate without a training day— not just the one tech-savvy person in the building.
Existing equipment was to be reused wherever possible instead of replaced, so the budget could go where it genuinely makes a difference. And the rebuild itself couldn't disrupt teaching: no downtime, no lecture cancelled because of a construction site.
SOLUTION
At the centre stood a completely reworked media control system, built around a single guiding idea: maximum simplicity in operation. A clean interface, clear functions, no guesswork.
All existing components — wireless microphones, projector, screen, sound system and media PC — were integrated into the new control wherever possible. That saved considerable cost, because not everything had to be bought new, and at the same time created one consistent, end-to-end way of operating the room.
In parallel, the sound system was improved: modern AI-based speech filters now keep feedback to a minimum — speech intelligibility stays stable, from the front row to the back.
The rebuild was deliberately scheduled into a period when the hall wasn't in use anyway, and kept as short as possible. No downtime in live operation.
Our Scope of Work
Media control, rethought — concept, build and programming of a central, clean control system with one clear goal: it had to be operable without any technical background.
Existing equipment integrated, not replaced — wireless microphones, projector, screen, sound system and media PC were brought into the new control wherever it made technical sense, saving acquisition costs and protecting the budget.
Sound system with AI speech filtering — optimisation of the audio and the use of modern AI-based speech filters to reduce feedback to a minimum and secure speech intelligibility across the room.
Rebuild without interrupting operation — carried out during the hall’s unused period and kept as short as possible, so live teaching never had to stop.
On-site training & illustrated manual — comprehensive on-site training for the users plus an illustrated manual, so the technology can be operated confidently by everyone in day-to-day use.
Result
An aging, failure-prone setup became a modern, clear solution that works reliably again — and that no longer depends on a single person.
The control can be operated by everyone on the team. The existing technology was reused sensibly instead of being replaced across the board. And the lecture hall stayed available for teaching throughout the entire rebuild. Exactly what a good modernisation should deliver: noticeably better, without unnecessary effort.
